Nearly half of the world’s organic carbon is stored in Arctic permafrost. This fact would be minor, if the permafrost wasn’t rapidly melting due to global warming. The sunlight and microbes in rivers and streams turn carbon into carbon dioxide (CO2). When the permafrost melts, stored carbon is released into streams and lakes in the Arctic. This carbon is exposed to sunlight, which enhances microbes’ ability to decompose it and turn it into carbon dioxide. Because of the lack of trees and coverings in the Arctic, the sun shines directly on the exposed rivers and streams that contain these
microbes. Also, in the summer there is sunlight in this region 24 hours a day, which gives the carbon-eating microbes extra time to convert their delicious meal into CO2. Experts say that this extra carbon dioxide has the potential to “exacerbate” global warming.

It is blatantly obvious in the scientific community that there are changes to our natural world due to the rising of earth’s temperatures, but the subject remains controversial because some believe it is a hoax. The environmental impacts of an excess amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are significant. This major problem is causing global warming. Earth’s temperatures rises, which melts the permafrost, resulting in the release of CO2 and furthering of global warming. Essentially, global warming is causing global warming. This is an environmental disaster because it could speed up the already fast pace of rising temperatures and continue to destroy the environment.
